Starting in the city of Angkor you’ll connect to the routes of Buddhism, and meet monks to understand the religion in the modern day context. Journey north to meet environmental activist monks, spend the night with a family in a rural village, and conclude your trip with nuns in a colonial city.

 

DAY 1 – Arrive Siem Reap

Your guide will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your accommodation. Depending on your time of arrival, activities may vary. We’ll host a welcome dinner and give you an introduction to Cambodian culture.

DAY 2 – Introduction to Buddhism

Today you’ll be introduced to Theravada Buddhism in the context of Cambodia You’ll visit a working pagoda, meet a monk, and participate in a welcome blessing to start your journey with good wishes!

DAY 3 – Temples of Angkor

An early start to catch sunrise at the mighty Angkor temples. We’ll spend the day exploring the Angkorian temples, including famous sites such as Ta Phrom, Bayon, and of course Angkor Wat, as well as lesser visited ruins and pagodas in the forest.

DAY 4 – Odor Meanchey

You’ll transfer to the rural town of Odor Meachey. Here, you’ll meet an inspirational group of monks leading environmental activism to protect a stunning area of forest. Today’s learning theme will be about socially engaged Buddhism, and the powerful role monks have in spearheading development initiatives.

DAY 5 – Banteay Chhmar

We’ll travel onto another rural location, the community of Banteay Chhmar. Here is a collection of Angkorian temples with far fewer visitors, and a community based tourism program that promotes equitable tourism for the benefit of local people. You’ll spend the night at a homestay with a local family, after exploring village life and crumbling temple ruins.

DAY 6 – Battambang

Today we head to Battambang, a quiet town full of pretty colonial buildings. We’ll connect you to a group of nuns to spend the afternoon learning about life in the pagoda. Tonight, we’ll have a farewell dinner at a social enterprise restaurant.

DAY 7 – Tour concludes in Battambang

This tour ends in Battambang to allow participants the chance to explore at their own leisure or extend their stay at the Dhamma Vipassana Centre (see left). Ayana can also help you coordinate onward travel, or return transport to Siem Reap.

DAY 2 – Introduction to Buddhism

DAY 3 – Cultural & spiritual activities in Phnom Penh

There’ll be chance to explore some of Phnom Penh’s cultural sites and continue visiting and learning about the capital’s sites of Buddhism significance.

DAY 4 – Oudong

We’ll transfer to the holy mountain of Oudong to visit a hilltop temple and check in to a meditation centre on the adjacent hill. You’ll meet a group of beautiful nuns and spend the afternoon with them practicing Vipassana meditation and learning about life in the pagoda.

DAY 5 – Oudong

Sunrise will be enjoyed overlooking the pagoda at Oudong. Nurturing your practice at Vipassana, today you’ll continue to immerse yourself in in meditation with your nun hosts.

DAY 6 – Battambang

An early start to transfer to Battambang through the Cambodian countryside. Battambang is a quiet town full of pretty colonial buildings. We’ll connect you to a group of nuns to spend the afternoon learning about life in the pagoda. Tonight, we’ll have a farewell dinner at a social enterprise restaurant.

DAY 7 – Tour concludes in Battambang

Our 1 week Buddhism Experiences can be taken at any time (based on our availability) or at the following dates to coincide with a 10 day Vipassana meditation retreat in Battambang at the end of your trip with us.

Note: To coordinate your stay at the Vipassana centre; please refer to their website directly to make a booking. It is strongly recommended you apply for the Vipassana retreat in advance of coming to Cambodia.
